Statement on the passing of Dr. Dermot Keogh

Holocaust Education Ireland is saddened to learn of the death of Prof Dermot Keogh.

His scholarly study of the Jews in Ireland and attitudes towards them used official data sources. Attitudes could be contradictory to what has always been a small community who came to play an outsize part in many aspects of Irish life including politics, the arts, law and medicine.

Professor Keogh highlighted the Irish state’s ‘lost chance’ to save Jews during the key period between 1938 and 1941. A situation that was common in other countries with baleful consequences.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in UCC.

We will speak his name with respect and admiration.
